Have you been thinking about counseling for awhile? It's not uncommon for people to consider getting help for weeks and sometimes months before they make the first call. Nervousness and some embarrassment are natural feelings people sometimes have when they seek help. But remember, counseling is just people talking to each other.
My goal is to help you to feel comfortable. I strive to create a caring, non-judgmental atmosphere where people can develop the insights and skills they need to grow. My approach to counseling is down to earth and practical. I use a solution-focused, cognitive-behavioral approach that builds on the strengths already present in my clients.
So take a look around, get to know me, then give me a call to set up an appointment at my conveniently located, professional office in Fairport, NY. I'd be happy to answer any questions you might have when you call.
I have been in professional practice for 39+ years since 1985 and began my own private practice in 1994. Over the years I have worked mostly with adults and late adolescents. In addition to private practice, I've worked in outpatient mental health, day treatment, chemical dependency treatment, schools, and employee assistance programs. I also taught social work at the college level for several years and provide supervision to other professionals.
Born and raised in the Rochester, NY area I attended McQuaid Jesuit High School and then St. John Fisher College for my undergraduate studies. I earned my Master's degree in Social Work from Syracuse University in 1985 and am a New York State Licensed Clinical Social Worker. I have practiced in the Rochester, NY region for the past 39 years.
My training has been in cognitive-behavioral and marriage and family therapy, but I consider my greatest training to be my marriage of 39+ years and having three thriving children. Besides my professional interests I am an amateur photographer, enjoy playing the guitar and piano, golfing, and skiing and am an active Freemason.

"When I first came to see you, I thought I'd be in therapy for months. I was so surprised how quickly Cognitive Therapy helped me to change my feelings in just a few sessions. Thanks for teaching this to me!"
"I can't tell you how much you've helped me and helped me keep my job. I know you've given me the tools I need to cope and not let things overwhelm me and make me sick."
"Steve Michener cuts right to the heart. I went to Steve for help with a habit I couldn't seem to break. After one meeting, Steve showed me exactly what the problem was and gave me the perspective I needed to break the habit. There was no discussion of my mother's influence or my subconscious feelings -- just a frank discussion of motivation, beliefs and thoughts. Steve is great. "
